samjho — understand it, don't memorise it
A study companion for CBSE Class 10 Science and Mathematics. Pick a subject, a chapter and a section; ask questions and get answers cited back to chapter, section and page in your own copy of the book; work through the concept animations; then take a quiz and find out which sections you actually missed.
The samjho API is not answering
Tried http://localhost:8000 — Could not reach the samjho API at http://localhost:8000.
The chapter list on this page is still real: it was read from /var/task/data/syllabus/class10.json on this machine, which ships with the repo. Asking questions and taking quizzes need the API, so those are unavailable until it is running.

What this is
- Syllabus first. Every chapter and section of the Class 10 Science and Mathematics books, with the page each section starts on, taken from the book's own layout — not from prose.
- Cited answers only. Ask about a chapter and the answer is built from the passages retrieved from your ingested copy, with a chip per citation that jumps to
/subject/<subject>/chapter/<no>#section-<section>. Refusal is a feature: if your material does not cover the question, samjho says so, names the chapter that would, and shows nothing invented. - Concept animations. Interactive, keyboard-operable, drawn in the page: ray diagrams, circuits, field lines, unit-circle trigonometry, quadratic sliders and more, each mapped to the chapter it explains.
- Quizzes that tell you where you went wrong. Questions are generated only from that chapter's passages; after marking, the sections you missed are listed as links back to the chapter.
- Honest states. No corpus ingested, API down, or a subject ingested while another is not: each of those says what it is on the page, instead of showing an empty screen.
About the book text: what samjho does and does not include
samjho does not contain your textbook, and never serves it to anyone. NCERT's terms of use for its online textbooks say that republication of NCERT textbooks by any other individual or agency is strictly prohibited, and that no website or online service is permitted to host those online textbooks.
So the project is split in two:
- What ships with samjho: the chapter and section list with page anchors (factual structure taken from public syllabus documents), the concept animations, and the quiz and answer machinery. None of that is book text.
- What stays with you: the text of the book. You ingest it from your own copy, on your own machine, into a folder that is never committed and never uploaded. If you run samjho for yourself, the answers are built from your copy.
Answers are generated from the passages that were retrieved from your copy, and every sentence that leans on the book carries a citation — chapter, section and page — so you can check it against the page in front of you. They are not quotations from the book, and samjho will not pretend otherwise: when your material does not cover a question, it refuses and says so instead of writing something plausible.
Maths-heavy pages are a known weak spot: the PDF text layer for radicals and fractions degrades (for example 3√2 extracts as 3 2), so samjho answers maths questions at the section and reasoning level and points you at the page rather than reproducing a formula as if the extraction were faithful.
